From a Woman’s Perspective Column for October 19/04

Marlene writes, I am a piano teacher. I have lost 30 pounds and can no longer wear the clothes I have, nor do I wish to. I go to my student’s homes and am in and out of my car. I need a whole new wardrobe and have no idea where to start. What do you suggest?

Dear Marlene, First make certain that you have bra’s and underwear that fit and flatter you. Then, think about what colours you feel good wearing. Pick a basic neutral and shop for a pant and jacket. Do try different styles and fabrics. Use your mirror to evaluate the looks you try. You will find that the outfits that look good will stand out.

Try to understand why certain things look better on you than others. For example, decide what length of jacket flatters you. Try flat front pants. Slip on different tops. Eliminate the looks that don’t speak positively and select your best. To build a new wardrobe you will need a minimum of eight pieces of clothing to give you up to 24 changes. These items should be in a colour capsule with a basic colour as the anchor and another as an accent.

Since you are a teacher your clothing can be a look I call soft tailoring. For example, a classic pair of flat front pants in black, brown, navy or wine with a matching top (style of your choice) and then a jacket. The jacket can be a tweed or plaid blazer, shirt style or a sporty zipper jacket. By adding a walking jacket or cape or shawl you can be warm enough for the season and comfortable as you so from student to student. A brooch can add detail and if selected carefully it can be a conversation piece. For example a treble cleft or piano brooch will bring conversation and allow you to let people that you teach piano. A subtle way to advertise.

Since you need time to adjust to the new slim reflection in your mirror do not over buy. Pull a look together as I suggest and then wear it. As the season moves forward you can add items you feel you want and need. Usually it takes time for your eye to adjust and accept the new looks that you can now wear. Better to move slowly and build comfortably. Have fun putting your new wardrobe statement together.

Samantha writes, I am five feet tall and just tried a poncho. It fell to my ankles and I felt overwhelmed. Should I avoid the latest trend?

Dear Samantha, Ponchos come in many varieties and lengths. You most certainly can wear one. Just shop for a poncho that falls to your hips. This will leave your legs uncovered and not be so overwhelming for you. Also try a style that comes to a point front and back or a diagonal shape would also help create height.

Enjoy wearing and having fun with one of the new trends!
