Column for May 6-10/05

The spring/summer 2005 season fashion offerings are now available. For various reasons some women are at a point where they need to start building a wardrobe all over again.

Carol writes, I have just launched my own small business. My new career requires that I visit corporate head offices and meet with CEO’s. Up to now I have been at home with my children. My wardrobe has been fine for a very casual lifestyle. So far I own one black pant suit and three different white shirts. I need a work wardrobe. I am a size 14, brunette and on a limited budget. What should I get to give myself a practical work wardrobe? What should I add so I don’t look too stark?

Dear Carol Since you are just starting your business and your funds are limited your practical work wardrobe needs to build with a solid foundation. Your black suit is an investment. It is a solid practical basic that should be comfortable and suit you.

For future purchases avoid disposable trends. Develop an eye for quality and try on various looks and colours to discover your own personal style. Your black suit is a good start. However, no one says that you have to stick to black and white as a colour scheme. Everything works with black and you can extend your black suit by adding colour and texture. Try slipping a tank top or shell in a colour that suits your under your jacket. Simple tops are inexpensive and do a great job to add variety to a black and white colour scheme. Explore the season’s accessory offerings which can add variety to solid basics for very little cost. For example slip a scarf with an interesting texture and colour scheme under your collar. Inexpensive accessories if selected carefully can spice up your business look. If you can afford a couple of business wardrobe additions, select an alternative bottom. You have black pants so perhaps a pinstripe skirt would be tailored yet interesting.

Regardless of your shopping budget a wardrobe that consists of basic pieces will lay the foundation for a practical and effective business wardrobe. Take your time, make smart choices that will survive the seasons trendy offerings and you’ll have no regrets.

Louisa writes, I am a graphic artist and have just started looking for a job. What should I wear to a job interview?

Dear Louisa, Graphic design is a creative field of work. Do not dress in a conservative corporate mode. Your job interview outfit should be tasteful, flattering and express your personal style. Avoid a severe black or navy suit. Try co-ordinates such as a neat skirt or pants with a crisp shirt and a smart jacket in colours that flatter you. Add an interesting necklace and or a smart bag in an accent colour. Use your artistic flair to pull this special professional look together. Your visual message will re-inforce your creative ability. Good Luck in your job search!
