Selecting Eyewear

September means back to school, back to work and organizing for fall.

I have received a few requests for advice on selecting the right shape of eyeglasses so here is a general answer to help if you plan to choose eyeglass frames this fall. I have just spoken to Bijan Minbashian who is an optician and operations manager for Hakim Optical. Bijan specifies that when selecting eye glasses the eyes should appear centered in the frame. Your frames should be in proportion to your face size and contrast your face shape.

Sue writes: I have a round face and am shopping for my first pair of glasses. Can you help me with some advice?

Dear Sue If you have a round face opt for a rectangular shaped frame. This will contrast your round shaped face and have a thinning effect.

Jill writes: I have a long face and neck. I never know what frame suits me. Any help would be appreciated.

Dear Jill For a long face eye glass frames that are deeper than they are wide will be flattering. The decorative details at the temples will add width. Try curved shaped frames

Marina writes: I am a red head who loves to wear earth tones. I usually wear contact lenses but find I need glasses occasionally. My eyes are brown, What colour frames should I select.

Dear Marina Colour is as important as shape when selecting frames. If one pair of glasses need to work with everything you wear try a gold or bronze metallic frame. You could also look at tortoise shell earthy tone frames. Another option would be rimless glasses so colour is not a factor.

To all of you who are I a quandary about glasses, I recommend a visit to an optical store that carries a wide variety of frames. This way you can try them on and see how they feel as well as view them. Your selection should suit your face shape, your colouring, work with your wardrobe and most definitely be comfortable.

Bridgette writes: I love fashion. Now that I wear glasses I would like to start an eyeglass wardrobe. What would you think would comprise a basic eyeglass collection.

Dear Bridgette At the very least you need a pair of every day glasses and a pair of sunglasses to start. If it were me I would want a pair of “dress up” framed glasses or contacts. Since I love to co-ordinate, if money were not an issue, I would likely get a couple of pairs of glasses to go with my wardrobe for the season.

Eye glass frames today offer very dramatic as well as artistic statements. Shop for a pair that speak positively and they will be an effective addition to your total look. The right pair will look great with your face and work with your wardrobe. Take the time and try before you buy.
